Calculate Fuel Costs for Any Country

Select your region: UK (MPG & £/L), Europe and World (L/100km & €/L), or US (MPG & $/gal)

Our free fuel cost calculator helps UK drivers work out exactly how much petrol or diesel they'll need. Simply enter your distance, car's MPG rating, and fuel price. The average UK petrol price is around £1.35 per litre, but prices vary by location.

Note: Use UK MPG (imperial gallons). This is different from US MPG - if you see a different answer on US websites, that's because they use US gallons. Check your car's manual or fuel display for accurate UK MPG.

Fuel Cost Conversion Charts

Example calculation:
If you drive a car with 40 UK MPG with average UK petrol price of £1.35/L: 10 miles costs approximately £1.53. Calculation: 10 ÷ 40 × 4.546 × £1.35 = £1.53. Your actual cost varies based on your vehicle's fuel economy and local fuel prices.
Example calculation:
Using the same car (40 UK MPG) with average UK petrol price of £1.35/L: 15 miles costs approximately £2.30. Calculation: 15 ÷ 40 × 4.546 × £1.35 = £2.30. Your actual cost depends on your vehicle's efficiency and local fuel prices.
Example calculation:
For the same 40 UK MPG car with average UK petrol price of £1.35/L: 20 miles costs approximately £3.07. Calculation: 20 ÷ 40 × 4.546 × £1.35 = £3.07. Use our calculator above to get the exact cost for your specific journey and fuel prices.
Example calculation:
60 miles at 40 UK MPG with average UK petrol price of £1.35/L costs approximately £9.21. Calculation: 60 ÷ 40 × 4.546 × £1.35 = £9.21. This is a common commute or short trip distance. Your costs vary based on your vehicle and actual fuel prices.
Example calculation:
100 miles at 40 UK MPG with average UK petrol price of £1.35/L costs approximately £15.34. Calculation: 100 ÷ 40 × 4.546 × £1.35 = £15.34. This is a common road trip distance. Your costs vary based on your vehicle and actual fuel prices.
Formula: Divide 282.5 by your UK MPG
Example: 282.5 ÷ 50 UK MPG = 5.65 L/100km
UK uses imperial gallons (4.54609 litres), which is why the conversion differs from US MPG.
Formula: Divide 235.2 by your US MPG
Example: 235.2 ÷ 30 US MPG = 7.84 L/100km
US gallons are smaller (3.78541 litres), so US MPG figures are higher than UK MPG for the same efficiency.
UK MPG to KM/L: Multiply by 0.354
US MPG to KM/L: Multiply by 0.425
Example: 40 UK MPG × 0.354 = 14.16 KM/L
To UK MPG: Divide 282.5 by L/100km
To US MPG: Divide 235.2 by L/100km
Example: 282.5 ÷ 6.5 L/100km = 43.46 UK MPG
Formula: Divide 100 by L/100km
Example: 100 ÷ 5 L/100km = 20 KM/L
This shows how far you can drive per litre of fuel.
